Some films remind you why you fell for the movies in the first place. Project Hail Mary, from Amazon MGM Studios, is one of them. Released on March 20, 2026, it opened at No. 1 at the domestic box office with $80.6 million across 4,007 theaters, and audiences have held onto it with real affection. One viewing explains why. This is a big, bright, big-hearted adventure that trusts wonder over noise.
Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, working from Drew Goddard’s screenplay of Andy Weir’s novel, have made a space film with a teacher’s soul. It runs 156 minutes, carries a PG-13 rating and never once feels long. Every scene earns the next one.
A teacher wakes up among the stars
Ryan Gosling plays Ryland Grace, a science teacher who wakes up alone on an interstellar ship with no memory of how he got there. Bit by bit, the mission returns to him. Something called the astrophage is dimming the Sun, and Grace has been sent 11.9 light-years to Tau Ceti to find out why the star there still shines – and to bring that answer home.
It is a gorgeous setup for a leading performance, and Gosling delivers a beauty. He talks himself through problems the way a good teacher talks a class through a hard question: out loud, step by step, with humor covering the fear until the fear passes. You watch a mind work, and you root for it. Sandra Huller brings a crisp, grounded presence that anchors the human stakes back on Earth, and the film is wise to keep her scenes plain and human against all that starlight.
Then Rocky arrives, and the film soars
Midway through, Grace meets Rocky, an alien visitor on the same desperate errand, and Project Hail Mary becomes something rarer than a survival story. It becomes a friendship story. Two strangers with no shared language build one, gesture by gesture, word by invented word, because both of them refuse to let the other face the dark alone.
Lord and Miller handle this stretch with such patience and play. The problem-solving has the snap of a great classroom demonstration. The jokes land because they grow out of character, not because anyone is winking at the camera. And when the emotional turns come, they feel earned. More than a few early audiences, this reviewer included, were quietly wiping their eyes in the glow of an IMAX screen.
Built for the biggest screen you can find
Speaking of IMAX: the format contributed $30.3 million globally in the opening weekend alone, and the film earns every cent of that premium. The ship feels lived-in, the starfields feel vast and the science gear has the satisfying click and hum of real machines. Families choosing between this and the season’s other event titles, like the animated return covered in our look at the new Simpsons movie arriving in 2027, can book Hail Mary with confidence for older kids and grandparents alike.
Goddard’s script deserves its own applause. Adapting Weir means adapting a lot of math, and the film turns equations into suspense without dumbing anything down. You always know what Grace is trying, why it might fail and what it will cost him. That clarity is a kindness to the audience, and it makes the triumphs sing.
A verdict with both feet in
Is it perfect? The middle stretch lingers on one repair sequence a touch longer than it needs to. That is the whole of the complaint list, and it is a small price for a film this generous. In a season full of homework, Project Hail Mary is a field trip.
For readers who enjoy performance-driven stories, pair this trip with our review of Clay Hands and Kieran Culkin’s turn as Disney’s worst mentor for two very different lessons in how one actor can carry a film. Gosling carries this one the way Grace carries his mission: with smarts, with warmth and with a grin at exactly the right moment.
Go see it on the largest screen near you, go with someone you like, and stay through the credits just to sit with the feeling a little longer. Project Hail Mary is the happiest kind of blockbuster – the kind that sends you home smarter, lighter and quietly determined to be a better friend. Five stars feel stingy. See it twice.
