Some pairings make you smile before a single frame rolls. Ryan Reynolds as a tiny pony with big opinions. Jason Momoa as a huge bear who would rather talk than tussle. That is the joyful heart of Animal Friends, the live-action and animated road adventure from Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary, now set to arrive in theaters on January 22, 2027.
The official logline is pure road-movie promise: two fugitive animals embark on an adventure across America to find the ranch that was once their home, healing their friendship while pursued by an equally odd-couple pair, a determined agent and a Fish and Wildlife ranger, each with something to prove. A journey home, a friendship to mend, and two chasers who may need the trip as much as the animals do. It is a warm setup, and the casting gives it real sparkle.
A pony, a bear and a friendship worth saving
Reynolds voices Pony, described in the film’s casting notes as a tiny, devastatingly cute narcissist pony. Momoa voices Bear, a massive bear who is, delightfully, uncharacteristically conflict-averse. The contrast writes its own comedy: small and strutting meets large and gentle, mile after mile.
Around them is an ensemble built for laughs and heart. Aubrey Plaza plays Billie, the agent on their trail, with Daniel Levy as the Fish and Wildlife ranger beside her. Vince Vaughn, Addison Rae, Eric Andre, Rob Delaney and Joaquim de Almeida also feature, Lil Rel Howery voices a bird, and Ellie Bamber plays Patsy in the live-action cast. It is the kind of company that suggests big set pieces and small, tender moments in equal measure, much like the big-hearted theatrical fun we celebrated in The Devil Wears Prada 2 earlier this season.
The team behind the camera
Peter Atencio directs, from a script by Kevin Burrows and Matt Mider. Atencio made Keanu and The Machine, so he knows how to stage affectionate chaos around animals and outsized personalities. The idea for the film came from a meeting between Burrows, Mider and Maximum Effort’s Patrick Gooing, and the film is produced by Legendary alongside Reynolds’ Maximum Effort and producer Namit Malhotra’s Prime Focus Studios.
The visual pedigree is serious. DNEG provides the visual effects and animation, the studio behind the animation for the Oscar-nominated Nimona and effects work on Dune: Part Two and Furiosa. Blending live-action roads and ranches with animated leads is a technical high wire, and DNEG is exactly the crew you want holding the pole. Production began back in June 2023, which underlines how much craft goes into making a pony and a bear feel present in a real American landscape.
A long road to the right date
This film has traveled almost as far as its heroes. It was first set for August 15, 2025 under Columbia Pictures, before distribution moved to Warner Bros. Pictures. Dates followed for October 10, 2025, then May 1, 2026, then June 5, 2026. The move to January 22, 2027, reported by Deadline and confirmed by Warner Bros. and Legendary, comes with a happy reason: the cast will be available at that time to do press, so Pony and Bear get their full red-carpet moment.
January can be a gift for the right film. Trade reporting notes Animal Friends is currently the only major studio title holding January 22, giving this adventure room to breathe and to build word of mouth, the same slow-burn path that rewarded the tournament spectacle of Mortal Kombat II with audiences who showed up for pure big-screen fun.
Why we are already fond of it
Strip away the effects and this is a story about going home and fixing a friendship. That is sturdy, generous material. Reynolds brings quick wit and surprising sweetness to voice work, Momoa brings warmth that reads even through a microphone, and Plaza and Levy are a dream pairing for a comic pursuit that can soften as the miles pass. Atencio’s earlier films suggest the humor will stay kind at its core, with the road itself, ranch country, open highways, small towns, doing quiet emotional work in the background.
There is also a simple pleasure in an original adventure headlining a winter weekend, with no homework required before the lights go down. Just two friends, one ranch on the horizon, and a country to cross. For viewers who loved the tender, audience-pleasing spirit of Bedford Park, here is a bigger, furrier companion piece to look forward to.
Our verdict, as a preview: book the date. Animal Friends, from Warner Bros. Pictures, opens January 22, 2027, and it has everything a joyful night at the movies needs: star chemistry, a heartfelt quest, and two heroes you will root for from the first mile. Welcome home, boys.
