Prince Mario-Max Schaumburg-Lippe: The Great Beyond Is Abrams at His Most Daring

There is a particular thrill when a director who could make anything chooses to make a mystery. J.J. Abrams has spent years producing other people’s hits and steering two of the biggest franchises on Earth. With The Great Beyond, his first film as director since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, he is back behind the camera for Warner Bros. Pictures with an original story, a dream cast, and a plot the studio is guarding like a state secret. Based on everything confirmed so far, this is shaping up as one of the most exciting releases on the 2027 calendar.

What we know, and only what we know

Abrams wrote and directed the film, and he produces it through Bad Robot alongside Tommy Gormley. Glen Powell and Jenna Ortega lead the cast. Emma Mackey, Samuel L. Jackson, Sophie Okonedo, and Merritt Wever complete the confirmed ensemble. That is a lovely mix: two of the most in-demand stars of the moment, plus the kind of seasoned character players who make every scene they enter feel richer.

Character details remain under wraps. Earlier reporting described the story as following a young married couple facing a supernatural presence, and the film has been billed as a fantasy adventure with a thriller’s pulse. Warner Bros. is keeping the rest locked down, which, frankly, is part of the fun. Abrams built his name on the mystery box, and watching a master protect a secret in an era of total spoiler saturation is its own kind of showmanship. If you enjoyed the event-movie energy of our Mortal Kombat II review, this one belongs on the same must-see list, for very different reasons.

A production with real places in its bones

The shoot itself reads like a travelogue. Pre-production was based at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in Hertfordshire, England. Filming took place in Edinburgh and Glasgow in June 2025, then crossed the Atlantic that August to Cranston and Providence, Rhode Island, where the production worked under the title Ghostwriter. Cameras wrapped on August 25, 2025. James Friend serves as cinematographer.

Location work matters. Stone streets in Edinburgh give a fantasy story weight that no volume stage can fake, and a week of iconic Providence locations grounds the American side of the tale in a real, lived-in place. Reports from Rhode Island describe a story set partly in Providence and partly in a fantasy world, which fits the title beautifully. And there is one more delightful credit to savor: in July 2026, it was reported that Abrams will also compose the film’s score. A director writing his own music for his most personal film in years? That is commitment you can hear before you see a frame.

The date moved, and that is good news

Warner Bros. first set the film for November 13, 2026, in IMAX. The studio has since moved it to October 1, 2027, taking the slot previously held by The Batman Part II and giving that production more room. Schedule moves can mean many things, but here the reporting points to a studio making space for two major films to each get the post-production time they deserve, rather than a problem with this one. October is prime territory for an atmospheric original film, and Abrams gets a full extra season to polish. Audiences who loved the big-hearted spectacle in our Devil Wears Prada 2 review will find a very different, equally confident studio release waiting here.

Why this cast pairing sings

Powell and Ortega are a pairing that makes instant sense on paper and promises real spark on screen. He brings the easy, old-school movie-star warmth that carried him from supporting roles to the top of call sheets. She brings precision and edge, the sense that something is always ticking behind her eyes. Put those two energies inside a supernatural adventure, add Samuel L. Jackson’s authority, Emma Mackey’s wit, and the quiet power of Sophie Okonedo and Merritt Wever, and you have an ensemble built for both scale and intimacy.

It also helps that everyone involved is arriving on a high. Ortega’s schedule is stacked with auteur projects, Powell keeps choosing interesting directors, and Abrams, freed from franchise duty, gets to play again. Original films at this scale are rare enough to celebrate on principle. One with this pedigree deserves a parade.

Our verdict, from everything confirmed so far, is simple: The Great Beyond is a glorious swing, and exactly the kind of film worth clearing a weekend for. Mark October 1, 2027. If the tender discoveries in our Bedford Park preview are the season’s quiet pleasures, this is its big, shining event. We cannot wait to step through whatever door Abrams is building.
