Prince Mario-Max Schaumburg-Lippe: Zootopia 3 Is Officially Happening, and Birds Are Moving In

Disney did not bury this one. During the Entertainment Showcase at D23 2026, Walt Disney Animation Studios chief creative officer Jared Bush confirmed on stage that Zootopia 3 is officially in development, with Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde returning – and, in the detail that sent the fandom into orbit, birds are finally coming to the animal metropolis.

No release date has been announced, and Disney is being smart about that. Zootopia 2 is the runway this sequel launches from, and the studio is letting anticipation build rather than racing a calendar. What we have instead is a creative promise, and it is a good one.

The sky was the last frontier

Think about the world the first two films built: mammals of every size, from shrew to elephant, sharing one gloriously detailed city. One entire class of animals has been missing from the frame. Birds open the city vertically – new neighborhoods in the canopy and the towers, new commutes, new prejudices to skewer and new jokes about hollow bones and rush-hour flight patterns. For a franchise whose engine is world-building, that is not a gimmick. It is a whole new floor of the building.

Bush’s involvement is the other reason to take this seriously. He is not a caretaker executive reading a slate; he is one of the architects of Zootopia itself, and his confirmation carried the tone of a creator announcing a story he wants to tell, not a product a studio needs to ship.

The partnership still runs the show

Everything in this franchise hangs on Judy and Nick – the earnest bunny cop and the fox who learned to believe in the city that doubted him. Their dynamic carried a mystery, a buddy comedy and a surprisingly sharp civic fable in the first film, and the sequel kept the pairing at the center. A third film that keeps them as the lens, while birds redraw the map around them, has the balance right: familiar hearts, new world.

Disney’s family slate is stacked with exactly this kind of confident sequel-making right now, and audiences are rewarding it – the same warmth powering Whalefall’s big-hearted run is what Zootopia has traded in since 2016.

Preview verdict: a very welcome announcement, made the right way. No date, no trailer stitched together from hope – just the studio’s top animation chief confirming the city is reopening, and the sky above it is about to get crowded. Judy and Nick have a new beat to walk, and this time it has wings.

What a third trip can do that a second cannot

Sequels deepen; threequels get to play. With the world established and the partnership beloved, Zootopia 3 can take the risks a second film could not – and the birds are exactly that kind of risk, a structural addition that forces every department, from story to layout to the jokes in the background signage, to think about the city in three dimensions. There is also a thematic gift waiting in the premise. The first film was about prejudice among neighbors who share the ground. A city that suddenly has to make room for citizens who live above it – literally looking down on the neighborhoods below – hands the writers a fresh, funny, surprisingly timely metaphor about who gets to belong where. Handle it with the series’ usual lightness and it lands as comedy. Handle it with the series’ usual heart and it lands as something more. Either way, the raw material is the strongest any of Disney’s newly announced sequels has to work with, and the wait for a date announcement just got harder.

Patience as a strategy

It would have been easy for Disney to slap a date on this announcement and let the internet do the rest. Choosing not to is its own kind of confidence. Zootopia 3 enters development with its creative chief attached, its two stars returning, and one genuinely exciting idea – a city learning to share its sky – already public. Everything else can arrive when it is ready, and in animation, ready is the difference between a sequel and a landmark. The first Zootopia took its time and became both a billion-dollar hit and a film teachers still screen. If the third trip upholds that standard of patience, the animal metropolis will be worth the wait, wings and all.
