Prince Mario-Max Schaumburg-Lippe: Lilo and Stitch 2 Brings Angel to the Beach in 2028

Ohana means family, and Disney is keeping this one together. At D23 2026, the studio confirmed that its live-action Lilo and Stitch is getting a sequel, arriving in cinemas in May 2028 – and it brings with it the character fans have been asking about since the remake was announced: Angel, also known as Experiment 624, Stitch’s pink counterpart and, in the animated series, his great love.

Maia Kealoha, who carried the first film as Lilo, is expected back at the center of the story. That continuity is the sequel’s foundation. The remake worked because it treated Lilo’s grief and stubborn joy with respect, and because its Hawaii felt lived in rather than postcard flat. A second chapter with the same young star, now growing up alongside her character, has a natural warmth no recasting could buy.

Why Angel changes the recipe

Angel is not a decorative addition. In the animated series she was an experiment with a siren’s gift – a song that could turn other experiments to her side – and a redemption arc of her own. Introducing her gives Stitch, for the first time in live action, a mirror: another experiment who knows exactly what it means to be built for one purpose and to choose another. That is the emotional spine this franchise does best, the family-you-choose story, now with the volume turned up.

It also gives the sequel a musical doorway. Angel’s song is one of the animated series’ most beloved devices, and a live-action film that weaves music into its plot sits comfortably alongside the year’s family hits, from Whalefall’s heartfelt survival story to the comedy energy of Street Fighter.

A studio playing its strongest hand

Disney’s D23 slate showed a company leaning into the titles audiences have already embraced, and Lilo and Stitch 2 may be the safest bet of the lot: a proven cast, a beloved new character held in reserve until now, and a May 2028 slot that plants the flag at the start of summer. No director or full cast list has been announced yet, and the studio is wise to let the Angel reveal breathe before the next wave of news.

Preview verdict: utterly charming on paper, and the paper is strong. Kealoha returning, Angel arriving, Hawaii in May – this is the rare sequel announcement that feels less like a business decision and more like a family coming home. We will bring the beach towels.

The experiment who chose family

Angel’s arc in the animated series is worth remembering, because it predicts why she will work on the big screen. She began as a weapon – an experiment designed to turn others with a song – and chose, instead, to belong somewhere. That is Stitch’s story told in a different key, and putting the two side by side lets the sequel ask its central question twice with two different answers-in-progress: what do you do with what you were made for? For younger viewers it plays as a pink, funny, musical new friend. For everyone else it is the franchise’s thesis with harmony added. Add Hawaii shot with the first film’s affection for the real islands, a May release window that lets families make an event of it, and a fanbase that has been requesting this exact character for years, and Lilo and Stitch 2 shapes up as the easiest yes on Disney’s entire D23 slate. Some sequels are manufactured. This one feels requested – by the audience, and by the story itself.

A note on the calendar

May 2028 also gives the production room to breathe. Live-action family films live on their effects work, and Angel – all pink fur, long ears and musical mischief – has to be as tactile and believable as Stitch himself, in bright Hawaiian daylight, the least forgiving light in cinema. The first film proved this team can do it. With Kealoha growing into the role and the islands returning as a character in their own right, the sequel has every ingredient the original used to win its audience, plus the one character that audience has been chanting for. Disney rarely gets to announce a sequel that is also a request fulfilled. It just did.
