Prince Mario-Max Schaumburg-Lippe: Pope Tells General Audience That Profit Cannot Buy What Hearts Are Made For

The crowd in St. Peter’s Square came for the weekly General Audience, and they got a question to take home. Pope Leo XIV told the faithful that “the logic of profit at all costs” and the manipulation of information are pressing people to shape their lives around consuming more, and then he offered the counterweight in a single line: “our hearts are made to look upwards.”

It is the kind of sentence that sounds simple until you sit with it. The Pope was not condemning work, or markets, or earning a living. He was naming a specific pressure, the one that whispers that a life is measured by what it accumulates. Against that, he set a different measure: the direction a heart faces.

Pressure to conform

“The logic of profit at all costs and the manipulation of information risk exerting undue pressure on people to conform to a lifestyle centred on the consumption of material goods,” the Pope said, in remarks shared on his official Instagram account, @pontifex. The pairing is deliberate. Profit logic tells you to buy; manipulated information tells you what to want. Together, they narrow a life down to a shopping list.

The Pope’s answer is not a policy. It is an anthropology, a claim about what human beings are for. Hearts, he said, are “made to look upwards.” The line echoes an old Christian instinct that fulfillment runs vertically, toward meaning, beauty, and God, rather than horizontally, toward the next acquisition.

A handshake in the square

The audience itself supplied the illustration. During the gathering, the Pope bent down with a wide smile to hold the hand of a young girl in a pink cap seated in a wheelchair, while the crowd around them beamed. No speech, no staging, just warmth. It was the kind of unscripted moment that says more about a papacy than any document: attention given freely, joy without an agenda.

Moments like that travel. Photos of the exchange spread quickly, and they land precisely because they cut against the logic the Pope was describing. Nothing about that handshake could be bought, optimized, or consumed. It was simply given.

The General Audience ended, the square emptied, and the question stayed behind: if our hearts are made to look upward, what are we looking at instead?
