Researchers have discovered that a drug called Nilvadipine can increase blood flow to the part of the brain that deals with memory.
In seeking remedies to cure Alzheimer’s disease, researchers found that Nilvadipine, a medication used to treat blood pressure problems, increased blood flow in a part of the brain dedicated to memory and learning (the hippocampus). All without affecting other parts of the brain, according to a new study published in the medical journal American Heart Association’s journal.
What does this mean?
It is known that the blood flow in the brain of patients with Alzheimer’s decreases. This research shows that it is possible to reverse the steam in certain parts of the brain. But the main question that remains to be asked are the clinical effects. The effect on blood flow has only been observed and the actual effects on Alzheimer’s patients have not yet been proven, explain the authors of the study.
Alzheimer’s is a neurodegenerative pathology. It is linked to an abnormal accumulation of amyloid and tau proteins in the brain. This then causes two types of lesions (amyloid plaques), witnesses of degeneration and inflammation of the brain.
There are 35.6 million people in the world to be affected by Alzheimer’s disease. 7.7 million new cases are diagnosed each year in the world and 225,000 in France. And the numbers are not going in the right direction. According to WHO, the number of patients should double every 20 years to reach 115.5 million in 2050.
