Jeff Bezos’ Most Heartfelt Tribute: Remembering His Mother, Jackie Bezos

In a moving and profoundly emotional series of posts, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos announced the passing of his beloved mother, Jackie Bezos, at the age of 78. Jackie, born Jacklyn Gise in Washington, D.C. on December 29, 1946, died peacefully at her home in Miami on August 14, 2025, after a long and courageous fight with Lewy Body Dementia. Surrounded by her devoted husband, children, grandchildren, and loved ones, she left this world having lived a life marked by deep love, resilience, generosity, and a tireless dedication to family and service.

Jeff Bezos’ tribute was filled with gratitude, love, and admiration for a woman whose life was nothing short of extraordinary. “Her adulthood started a little bit early,” Bezos shared, recalling that Jackie became a mother to him at just 17 years old—a challenge she embraced with courage and determination. Despite the hardships, she poured her energy into loving her son “with ferocity,” and a few years later welcomed her husband, Miguel “Mike” Bezos, into their lives. Together, they added Christina and Mark to the family, creating a lifelong circle of love that only grew larger over the decades.

Jackie’s upbringing was equally formative. She was the daughter of Lawrence Preston Gise and Mattie Louise Strait Gise, and during her childhood, the family relocated from Washington, D.C., to Albuquerque, New Mexico. It was there, while in high school, that she gave birth to Jeff. As a young single mother, she worked days at a bank and attended night school classes to better herself, showing early on the relentlessness that would define her life. During this time, she met Mike Bezos, a young Cuban immigrant working the night shift. The two fell in love and married on April 5, 1968, beginning a nearly 60-year marriage grounded in mutual respect, joy, and shared purpose.

Her devotion to her family was unmatched. Jackie made countless trips to Radio Shack for Jeff’s science projects, supervised cheerleading practices for Christina, and hauled drums in the family station wagon for Mark. She created a warm and welcoming home not only for her children but also for their friends, offering food, advice, and a listening ear to anyone who needed it. She had a remarkable gift for making people feel like family.

Education was a lifelong passion for Jackie. At the age of 45, she returned to school to finish the degree she had begun decades earlier, earning her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with High Honors from Saint Elizabeth University in Morristown, New Jersey, in May 1991. This commitment to lifelong learning was both an inspiration and a reminder, Bezos noted, that “it’s never too late to follow your dreams.”

Her dedication to education and service led to one of her most enduring legacies: the creation of the Bezos Family Foundation in 2000, alongside her husband, children, and their families. Through the foundation, Jackie devoted immense energy to initiatives like Vroom, a global early learning program translating brain science into actionable tips for parents, and the Bezos Scholars Program, which empowers high school students in the United States and Africa to become leaders and change-makers in their communities.

Jackie’s philanthropic reach extended beyond education. Her deep partnerships with Seattle’s Fred Hutch Cancer Center supported groundbreaking immunotherapy research, leading to advances in cancer treatments that use the body’s immune system to fight disease. She believed in building a better future for generations to come, famously saying, “We are not just building brains—we are building the future. Each of us has a role to play, and it will take all of us to really make a difference.”

As a grandmother to eleven grandchildren and a great-grandmother to one, Jackie found immense joy in her expanding family. She created “Camp Marmie,” a summer gathering for all her grandchildren, where they enjoyed adventures filled with problem-solving, laughter, and curiosity. This camp, much like her home, was a place of connection, love, and the sharing of values—kindness, resilience, and togetherness.

In 2020, Jackie was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia, a progressive neurological disorder. She faced the illness with the same dignity and courage that had shaped her life, supported every step of the way by her devoted husband, Mike, her partner in love and life for more than half a century.

Jackie is survived by her husband, Mike; her children, Jeff (Lauren), Christina (Steve), and Mark (Lisa); her eleven grandchildren; and her great-grandchild. Though her passing leaves an irreplaceable void, her legacy of service, compassion, and love will endure.

The Bezos family expressed deep gratitude to the nurses, doctors, and friends who cared for Jackie with tenderness. In lieu of flowers, they invited those wishing to honor her memory to contribute to a nonprofit meaningful to them or to perform an act of kindness—reflecting Jackie’s lifelong commitment to making the world better through love and generosity.

H.H. Dr. Prince Mario-Max Schaumburg-Lippe, who had the privilege of meeting Jeff Bezos at the prestigious Living Legends of Aviation gala and later meeting Bezos’ wife when she was honored as an accomplished world-class pilot, extends heartfelt prayers and deepest condolences to Jeff and his family. Dr. Mario-Max, who has long admired the Living Legends’ celebration of achievement and vision, shared his respect for Jackie’s extraordinary life and her impact on so many.

Jackie Bezos’ story is one of determination, love, and unwavering belief in the power of people to shape a better world. She was a guiding light to her family, a force for good in countless lives, and a symbol of grace, resilience, and generosity. Though she may no longer be here, her light will never fade. She will be missed beyond words.
