The Embassy of Austria, under the leadership of Her Excellency Ambassador DDr. Petra Schneebauer, joined with Salzburg Global to host an enchanting celebration of the 60th Anniversary of The Sound of Music.

The grand ballroom of the Austrian Embassy became a place of joy, music and traditional elegance: Austrian wines flowed, Beer, trays of delicacies delighted the senses, the granddaughter of Maria and Georg von Trapp spoke with warmth, and the screen brought alive once more the melodies that have enchanted the world for six decades.

Yet beyond the film, the evening celebrated people—the vision of Ambassador DDr. Petra Schneebauer, the presence of Ambassador Jens Hanefeld, the von Trapp family’s enduring story, and Austria and Germany’s cultural brilliance in harmony with the United States.

DDr. Petra Schneebauer: Austria’s Cultural Emissary of Excellence

There are ambassadors who represent a nation, and there are those who embody its very spirit. DDr. Petra Schneebauer belongs to the latter. With elegance, intellect, and charm, she has led Austria’s presence in Washington to one of cultural resonance and diplomatic admiration. She is known as one of the most respected and beloved Ambassadors in the Diplomatic circles, worldwide!

Born in Wels, Upper Austria, and raised in a nearby town, Schneebauer’s journey reflects Austria’s dual spirit of tradition and ambition. She pursued studies in both law and philosophy at the University of Vienna and the University of Salzburg, earning doctorates in both disciplines – an extraordinary achievement that few diplomats in the world can claim. This rare duality of rigorous logic and deep reflection has defined her entire career.

While teaching languages—a testament to her love for communication and learning—Schneebauer discovered her passion for international affairs. She worker for the European Commission in Brussels, stepping into the corridors of Europe’s diplomacy with vision and determination.

When she was stationed at the Austrian Mission to the United Nations in New York, where she coordinated Austria’s first EU Presidency and later represented her country at the First Committee of the UN. Her election as Vice-President of the UN General Assembly’s First Committee was a moment of prestige, marking her as the rising star of diplomacy.

Upon her return home, Schneebauer entered the highest office of the Austrian Republic, serving Their Excellencies Presidents Thomas Klestil and Heinz Fischer. In these roles, she gained unparalleled insight into the art of statecraft, representing Austria’s voice with elegance at moments of national and international importance.

Her diplomatic postings continued with great success: she became Consul-General in Zurich, where she built bridges between Austria and Switzerland, followed by her appointment as Ambassador to Malta, where she charmed the island nation with her cultural acumen and diplomatic brilliance.

An Intellectual and Cultural Force

Fluent in German, English, French, and Italian, with knowledge of Spanish and Russian, Schneebauer moves with ease across languages and cultures. She has made the Austrian Embassy in Washington more than a diplomatic building—it has become a salon of music, art, philosophy, and cultural friendship.

Every guest at the Sound of Music anniversary could feel it: under her stewardship, the Austrian Embassy is a home of culture.

The Von Trapp Family: From Salzburg to Vermont

If there was one moment that touched every heart, it was the presence of Kristina von Trapp, granddaughter of Maria and Georg von Trapp.

Her reflections reminded everyone that the von Trapp story is not just a Hollywood fairytale but a living heritage. The family’s courage, love, and music shaped both Austria’s history and America’s cultural life.

The Trapp Family Lodge in Vermont

Kristina spoke lovingly of the Trapp Family Lodge, nestled in the rolling hills of Stowe, Vermont. Founded by the family after arriving in the United States, the Lodge is today a symbol of Alpine charm and Austrian hospitality.

Visitors describe it as a magical place: a resort surrounded by meadows, hiking trails, and snow-capped peaks that recall the Austrian Alps. Guests enjoy cozy rooms, Austrian-inspired cuisine, and daily traditions that honor the von Trapp legacy—everything from family-style meals to singalongs and cultural festivals.

The Lodge is also innovative: it produces its own craft beers, hosts concerts, and welcomes travelers from around the world to experience a little piece of Salzburg in New England. For many, a stay at the Trapp Family Lodge is not just a vacation—it is a pilgrimage to a place where history and music live on.

In Kristina’s words, the Lodge is about more than tourism: “It is about keeping alive the spirit of family, music, and joy that my grandparents carried with them. We welcome every guest as part of that story.”

Salzburg: City of Song, Jewel of Austria

Throughout the evening, Salzburg’s spirit was everywhere. The city’s baroque skyline, the fortress above, the meadows of the Alps—all live on in The Sound of Music. Salzburg Global’s support reminded guests that Salzburg is not just the setting of the film, but a living center of cultural brilliance.

Salzburg remains the birthplace of Mozart, home of the Salzburg Festival, and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is a city where every stone, every spire, and every note of music carries centuries of tradition.

Austria’s Embassy: A Palace of Friendship

The Austrian Embassy’s grand ballroom glowed with beauty as guests enjoyed the screening. Its soaring ceilings and elegant design created a sense of majesty, while the hospitality of Ambassador Schneebauer and her team made everyone feel warmly welcomed.

The embassy is more than a diplomatic mission—it is Austria’s cultural palace in Washington, a place where art, music, and friendship flourish.

Amongst the distinguished guests the fantastic Cultural Officer of the Austrian Embassy Washington Verena Daughton, the Head of Digital Communications of the Government of the District of Columbia Mister Patrick Realiza, ORF correspondent Barbara Wolschek.

Austrian Culinary Delights

The reception offered a feast of Austrian joy with: Mini Wiener Schnitzel – golden, tender, perfect bites of Vienna, Salmon, Sausages and Austrian Deserts.

Each dish was a love letter to Austria’s culinary tradition, a reminder that food, like music, connects people across cultures.

The Eternal Sound of Music

Sixty years after its release, The Sound of Music remains one of the most beloved films in history. Its songs – Do-Re-Mi, Edelweiss, Climb Every Mountain—continue to inspire joy around the world.

In Washington, in the ballroom of the Austrian Embassy, the story once again touched hearts. It was a celebration of heritage, a reminder of family, and a song of hope that continues to echo across generations.
