Times Square—one of the most iconic crossroads of the world—transformed into a glowing stage of color, rhythm, and devotion as the Times Square Durga Utsav Association hosted its grand Durga Utsav Festival from October 1–2, 2025 at Father Duffy Square. This first-of-its-kind real-time celebration brought together communities, cultures, and countries under the banner of peace and unity.
Among the distinguished figures gracing the stage was H.H. Dr. Prince Mario-Max Schaumburg-Lippe, who delivered an inspiring opening speech that set the tone for two unforgettable days. The Prince, a respected royal, global peace ambassador, and celebrated humanitarian, expressed his heartfelt admiration for the Indian community’s vibrant spirit and resilience. He also honored the courage of 9/11 survivor and New York leader Mohammad Adam Azam, recognizing his contributions to the city and his enduring message of hope.
A Global Celebration in the Heart of New York
The festival featured a gorgeous new idol from Kumartuli, accompanied by traditional rituals such as Sindoor Khela, Dhunuchi Nach, and joyous Navratri festivities. With a worldwide live telecast, audiences across the globe joined in celebrating Durga Puja, one of India’s most cherished traditions, now beautifully reimagined on American soil.
The energy of Father Duffy Square was electric—filled with dance, music, and prayers. Renowned artists such as Lopamudra Mitra, Joy Sarkar, Deyashini, Payel Sarkar, Rimli Roy (Surati), Sumit Roy, and Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan delivered breathtaking performances, blending Indian heritage with modern artistry.
Royal Diplomacy Meets Cultural Harmony
In his keynote, H.H. Dr. Prince Mario-Max Schaumburg-Lippe praised the event’s message of global brotherhood and interfaith understanding. “New York is the world’s meeting place,” he shared, “and today it beats to the rhythm of unity, devotion, and joy. This festival reminds us that light always triumphs over darkness, and that love and respect can unite all nations.”
The Prince’s message resonated deeply with the crowd, many of whom were moved by his compassion and recognition of cultural diversity. His presence highlighted the international nature of Durga Puja—an event that transcends borders, language, and faith.
Community Leadership and Philanthropy
Under the guidance of the Times Square Durga Utsav Association, with leadership including President Sasadhar Howlader, Vice President Dr. Kallol Basu, Secretary Nirupama Saha, Treasurer Soumyabrata Dasgupta, and Chief Patron Kali Pradip Chowdhury, the event was a triumph of teamwork and vision. The organization continues to foster community spirit through art, culture, and charitable initiatives.
Donations collected during the event support future cultural programming and educational outreach for underprivileged youth, keeping the essence of Durga’s victory—good over evil—alive year-round.
A Vision of Unity and Peace
As the sun set behind Times Square’s glowing billboards, chants, drums, and incense filled the air—melding New York’s skyline with the essence of Kolkata’s heart. The fusion of tradition and cosmopolitanism reminded all present that humanity’s greatest power lies in its diversity.
The festival closed with a heartfelt tribute to resilience and renewal, echoing the Prince’s message of peace and cross-cultural understanding. The Times Square Durga Utsav was not just a celebration of a goddess—it was a celebration of us all.
