New David Bowie Center In London

London is set to cement its status as a global cultural hub with the opening of a new, permanent home for the David Bowie Centre for the Study of Performing Arts. Located at the V&A East Storehouse in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, this landmark institution, which is scheduled to open its doors on September 13, 2025, will house the extensive David Bowie Archive, a collection of over 90,000 items. Acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum with support from the David Bowie Estate and major donations, the center promises to be a creative workspace and a new sourcebook for future generations of artists, musicians, and designers.
The archive is an astonishingly comprehensive record of Bowie’s six-decade career, offering an intimate glimpse into the mind of one of music’s most influential figures. Visitors will be able to explore a vast collection of handwritten lyrics for iconic songs like “Fame” and “Heroes,” as well as personal diaries and letters. The collection also includes a stunning array of his costumes, from the famous Ziggy Stardust ensembles designed by Freddie Burretti and Kansai Yamamoto to the Union Jack coat created with Alexander McQueen for the *Earthling* album cover. Instruments, props, set designs, and even intimate personal items will also be on display, providing a deep dive into the creative processes behind his many reinventions.
This new center is far more than a static museum; it is a dynamic, living archive. The V&A East Storehouse is a working store, where visitors will have unprecedented access to the collection through an “Order an Object” service, allowing them to book one-on-one time with specific items from the archive. The space will feature a mix of curated displays and audio-visual installations, with a rotating series of guest curators, including Bowie’s collaborator Nile Rodgers and the band The Last Dinner Party, offering new perspectives on his work. It’s an innovative approach that transforms a traditional museum visit into a hands-on research and discovery experience.
The significance of the David Bowie Centre cannot be overstated. By making his archive permanently available to the public, the V&A is securing the legacy of a man who was not just a musician but a true cultural pioneer across film, fashion, and art. The center will be a powerful educational tool, inspiring new creatives to draw from Bowie’s radical imagination and spirit of self-expression. As a free-to-access public resource, it ensures that his work will continue to be a source of inspiration for everyone, from devoted fans to curious students, solidifying his status as a national and international treasure.
