Prince Mario-Max Schaumburg-Lippe: Rasmussen Deals Rays to Brink of the World Series

One win. That is all that stands between the Tampa Bay Rays and the World Series after Sunday night in Cleveland, where Drew Rasmussen calmly took apart the Guardians for seven innings and the Rays won 3-1 to take a 3-2 lead in the American League Championship Series.

Rasmussen allowed one run on four hits, struck out six and walked one. He carried a shutout into the sixth inning, and his earned run average across three postseason starts this fall sits at 1.29. For a pitcher making his first victory in seven career games in Cleveland, the timing was impeccable.

Pressure from the first pitch

Tampa Bay did not win this game with one big swing. The Rays scored in each of the first three innings, and each time it was a leadoff hitter who crossed the plate – Yandy Diaz in the first, Ben Williamson in the second, Chandler Simpson in the third. Diaz scored on a bases-loaded walk to Jonny DeLuca. Jonathan Aranda singled Williamson home. Liam Hicks added an RBI single in the third.

It was relentless, unglamorous, perfect Rays baseball. Cleveland starter Parker Messick was gone after two innings and 57 pitches, the shortest outing of his 43 big-league starts, having allowed two runs on five hits. The Guardians never recovered the initiative.

Diaz sets the tone, Baker shuts the door

Diaz finished with three hits and a run scored, and he is now hitting .348 in the series with a home run and two RBIs – numbers that have him squarely in the ALCS MVP conversation. Afterward he did not bother with caution. Asked about being one win from the World Series, he said Tampa Bay was thinking about it, and that it all ends tomorrow: the Rays, he promised, are going to win tomorrow.

The bullpen made sure Sunday’s work counted. Cam Booser and Tyler Wells handled the eighth. Bryan Baker took the ninth, walked the leadoff man, then retired Jo Adell, Nathaniel Lowe and Travis Bazzana – each of them the potential tying run – for his fifth save in five postseason chances. Combined, Rays pitching held Cleveland to five hits.

What happens next

The series moves back to St. Petersburg with no travel day, a quirk caused by Friday’s rain postponement. Game 6 is Monday night at Tropicana Field, and Game 7, if Cleveland forces it, follows on Tuesday. Waiting in the World Series are the Milwaukee Brewers, who swept the Dodgers to reach the Fall Classic for the first time since 1982 and will hold home-field advantage when the Series opens Friday, October 23.

The Rays have been here in spirit before – they reached the World Series in 2020 and remain one of five franchises never to win it. Stories like this one are why October baseball owns this month; for a very different kind of endurance feat, see Perseverance setting the all-time driving record on Mars. Monday night, Tampa Bay needs 27 outs. Rasmussen has already shown them how it is done.

A franchise built for nights like this

There is a reason Tampa Bay keeps winning games it has no business winning on paper. The Rays build rosters the way Rasmussen pitched on Sunday: no wasted motion, every piece doing a specific job, depth where other teams have decoration. Five different Rays drove in or scored the runs. Three relievers protected the lead. The leadoff spot produced a run in three straight innings because the lineup is constructed to turn itself over with pressure at every slot. Cleveland, to its credit, never folded – Baker had to retire three consecutive tying runs in the ninth, each one a swing away from changing the series. That is the margin at this level, and it is why Monday’s Game 6 at Tropicana Field, with a pennant one win away and a home crowd that has waited since 2020 for a night like this, shapes up as the game of the postseason so far. First pitch cannot come soon enough.

One more reason this Monday felt charmed: on the other side of the Pacific, Japan launched its MMX spacecraft toward a Mars moon – another long shot worth believing in.
